The Banks Foundation

Our Mission

The Banks Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization dedicated to supporting families on their journey from welfare to work and from governmental rental assistance to private homeownership.

Since our founding on November 17, 2000, we have focused on providing the final “bridge”—down payment assistance—to families who have demonstrated the desire and discipline to move up and off of governmental rental assistance.

Impact in Action

Our first recipient was a single mother of two in Durham, NC. Through a Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) contract, she cleared her credit, completed her education as a pharmacy technician, and attended homeownership workshops. On December 11, 2001, with the help of a $1,000 grant from The Banks Foundation toward her closing costs, she purchased her first home for $78,000. She transitioned from a resident of public housing to a proud homeowner and a stable provider for her family.

Apply for Assistance

The Foundation provides down payment assistance to individuals and families who meet specific financial and self-sufficiency milestones.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must have previously received governmental rental assistance.

  • Must have entered into and successfully completed a Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) contract or a similar program.

  • Total household income must be less than 80% of the area median income.

  • Must have already qualified for a home mortgage loan.

How to Apply:

To process a grant application, we require a copy of your completed FSS contract (or similar agreement) and a copy of your completed mortgage loan application.

  • Processing Time: Please allow a minimum of 10 business days.
